The Transportation Security Administration (TSA), a U.S. government agency responsible for ensuring the security of travelers and their luggage in the United States, achieved key advancements in 2023. These achievements focused on improving airport security measures and enhancing the overall passenger experience. The TSA's responsibilities include screening passengers and their baggage at airports to prevent prohibited items, such as weapons and explosives, from being carried onto aircraft. Here are the major highlights from TSA's 2023 operations:

  1. Passenger and Baggage Screening: TSA screened over 858 million passengers (average of 2.4 million per day), 484 million checked bags, and 1.9 billion carry-on items. A record 2.9 million passengers were screened on the Sunday after Thanksgiving.

  2. Firearms Interception: 6,737 firearms, 93% loaded, were prevented from entering secure airport areas and aircraft.

  3. Cybersecurity: TSA improved cybersecurity for critical transportation infrastructure, implementing new performance-based requirements for airport and aircraft operators.

  5. Mobile Driver’s License and Facial Recognition: TSA partnered with Apple, GET Mobile, Google, and Samsung to facilitate a seamless airport security experience for travelers from select states at 27 airports.

  6. Passenger Experience Survey: A survey of 13,000 travelers showed 93% satisfaction with the passenger experience and 94% confidence in TSA's security capabilities.

  7. Federal Air Marshal Service: Over 200,000 domestic and international flights were secured, with FAMS also expanding partnerships and conducting security assessments and training.
