AEGEAN Achieves Record Passenger Traffic in 2023
AEGEAN Airlines, a major Greek airline, reached a significant milestone in 2023 by carrying 15.5 million passengers. This figure represents a 26% increase over the previous year, adding 3.2 million more passengers.
AEGEAN's success in 2023 can be attributed to its strategic expansion and enhanced service offerings. The airline provided 18.5 million available seats, 3.1 million more than in 2022. This growth was driven by an increased presence in both domestic and international markets. Notably, the airline offered 11.1 million seats for international destinations, a notable increase of 2.2 million from 2022. As a result, international passenger traffic rose by 29%, reaching 9.2 million passengers.
The expansion of AEGEAN's network was a key factor in its growth. In 2023, the airline served 180 destinations across 49 countries, adding more than 30 new international destinations. Notable new routes included Athens to Dubai, Innsbruck, and Bratislava, as well as continued service to popular summer destinations during the winter.
AEGEAN's efforts also led to significant increases in passenger traffic at major Greek airports. Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” saw a 27% increase in passenger traffic, reaching a new record of 13 million passengers. Thessaloniki “Makedonia” Airport experienced a 28% increase, with international traffic up by 33%.
The airline's load factor, an indicator of seat occupancy, improved to 83.4%, up from 79.4% in 2022. This improvement reflects the effectiveness of AEGEAN's strategic initiatives and the growing demand for air travel in the region.
Dimitris Gerogiannis, CEO of AEGEAN, commented on the achievement, emphasizing the airline's commitment to offering more choices and enhancing travel experiences. He expressed optimism about maintaining the dynamic pace of growth in the new year despite various challenges.
AEGEAN's performance in 2023 represents a significant recovery and growth phase for the airline, underlining its role in promoting Greek tourism and connecting the country with a wide range of global destinations.
