Qatar Airways Inaugurates Direct Flights to Medan, Strengthening Qatar-Indonesia Ties

Qatar Airways has successfully launched its inaugural flight from Doha to Medan, marking Medan as the airline’s third destination in the Republic of Indonesia. The flight, which touched down at Kualanamu International Airport on Monday, 15 January 2024, complements over 40 weekly flights the award-winning airline operates to Jakarta and Bali. This development highlights the strengthening of ties between Qatar and Indonesia, especially in the wake of the Qatar-Indonesia 2023 Year of Culture.

The event, graced by His Excellency the Minister of State President of Qatar National Library Dr. Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al-Kawari, representing the State of Qatar, was held in collaboration with the ‘Years of Culture’ initiative. The Qatar-Indonesia 2023 Year of Culture focused on deepening the understanding of Qatar as a hub for arts, culture, tourism, education, and sports while celebrating Indonesian culture and fostering sustainable partnerships through more than 50 programs across both countries.

The Minister of State, H.E. Dr. Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al-Kawari, emphasized the importance of the new route, stating, “The success of the Qatar-Indonesia 2023 Year of Culture laid the groundwork for the launch of the new route between Doha and Medan, which will strengthen the people-to-people connections established last year.” He also thanked Qatar Airways for its commitment to excellence and connectivity.

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, expressed his delight at the expansion, saying, “We are delighted to announce the expansion of our global network with the introduction of our new operations to Medan. Our commitment to enhancing connectivity and offering passengers in Indonesia world-class travel experiences continues.”

During the inaugural event, passengers at the departure gate of Hamad International Airport (DOH) were greeted with cupcakes and music. Onboard the inaugural flight, QR966, esteemed officials were welcomed at Kualanamu International Airport with a water cannon salute. The official Gala dinner was attended by high-ranking officials and dignitaries from both countries, including the Ambassador of the State of Qatar to Indonesia, H.E Ms. Fawziya Edrees Salman Al-Sulaiti, and Indonesian Ambassador to Qatar, H.E Ridwan Hassan.

Marwan Koleilat, Qatar Airways Senior Vice President – Eastern Regions, commented on the expansion, stating, “We are pleased to welcome Medan, our third gateway in Indonesia, into our extensive network comprised of over 170 destinations worldwide.”

Mr. Achmad Rifai, President Director for PT Angkasa Pura 2, also remarked on the occasion, highlighting the significance of the new route for Kualanamu International Airport and travelers from North Sumatra.

The new direct service to Medan is operated by the state-of-the-art Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, featuring 22 Business Class seats and 232 Economy Class seats. The inaugural flight included a curated Indonesian menu onboard, offering a taste of the local cuisine to passengers.

Medan, the capital of the Indonesian province of North Sumatra, is an economic hub and commercial center attracting both business and leisure travelers. Its cultural diversity, scenic beauty, and unique culinary experiences make it an appealing destination.
