Cathay and Singapore Airlines Forge Partnership to Advance Sustainability

Cathay Pacific

In a landmark move, Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines (SIA) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on a wide array of sustainability initiatives. This strategic partnership aims to promote the development and utilization of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the Asia-Pacific region, a pivotal element for decarbonizing the aviation industry. The MoU, signed by Cathay Group CEO Ronald Lam and Singapore Airlines CEO Goh Choon Phong, was formalized during the 80th International Air Transport Association (IATA) Annual General Meeting and World Air Transport Summit in Dubai.

The collaboration is designed to support both airlines' ambitious goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Central to their agreement are two main areas of focus: advocating for the increased use of SAF and exchanging best practices to enhance sustainability performance.

Cathay and SIA will work together to elevate public awareness about the crucial role of SAF in reducing aviation's carbon footprint. They plan to advocate for policies that support SAF development and adoption within the region and promote the establishment of a global standard for accounting and reporting emission reductions attributable to SAF use. This joint effort aims to boost SAF production and encourage its broader adoption by exploring opportunities for joint procurement at selected locations.

Additionally, the airlines will share best practices aimed at minimizing waste, reducing single-use plastics, and improving energy efficiency in ground and cargo operations. This exchange is expected to enhance both carriers' sustainability performances and expedite the implementation of sustainable solutions across their operations.

Cathay Group CEO Ronald Lam emphasized the importance of this partnership: "As part of our collaborative ethos of ‘Greener Together’, we actively seek like-minded industry leaders for strategic partnerships in transitioning to sustainable aviation. Our collaboration with Singapore Airlines aims to accelerate and support the development of the SAF supply chain in the region, fostering a reliable SAF ecosystem to enable the industry to achieve its long-term decarbonization goals. Cathay was one of the first airlines in Asia to set a target of 10% SAF for its total fuel consumption by 2030, and we are undertaking a multi-pronged approach to contribute to the aviation industry’s transition towards a greener future."

Echoing this sentiment, SIA CEO Goh Choon Phong stated: "Singapore Airlines is committed to embedding sustainability in all aspects of our operations. At the same time, we recognize that we cannot achieve our targets alone. Our partnership with Cathay signifies our mutual ambition to enhance collaboration in sustainability initiatives in the Asia-Pacific region. Together we are helping to set the foundation for a more sustainable aviation industry and ensure that future generations continue to reap the benefits of air travel."

This collaboration between two of Asia's leading airlines marks a significant step forward in the region's efforts to promote sustainable aviation practices, setting a precedent for other airlines to follow. By working together, Cathay and SIA aim to drive the aviation industry towards a greener, more sustainable future.
