China Eastern Airlines Launches Seasonal Flights Connecting Perth and Shanghai

In a landmark development for Western Australia's connectivity with mainland China, China Eastern Airlines has inaugurated a seasonal trial service connecting Perth with Shanghai Pudong International Airport. This significant step, spanning four weeks over the bustling Chinese New Year holiday, marks a pivotal moment in international aviation and regional tourism.

The trial, scheduled from January 19 to February 17, 2024, will see three weekly non-stop flights operating between Perth (PER) and Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG). Utilizing the A330-200 aircraft, which boasts a capacity of 232 seats, the service aims to cater to the surge in travel demand during the festive period. The flights, coded MU7389 and MU7390, are conveniently timed, arriving in Perth at 10:00 am and departing at 12:30 pm on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

Perth Airport Chief Operating Officer Scott Woodward expressed optimism about this new connection. Emphasizing the broader economic implications, Woodward highlighted the potential benefits for key export sectors such as fresh produce, business, and leisure tourism. The direct link, he believes, will not only boost economic ties but also foster cultural exchanges between Shanghai and Perth.

This new air link is seen as a crucial step in strengthening tourism and business prospects in Western Australia. With Shanghai only a 10-hour flight away, the service offers Western Australians an opportunity to immerse themselves in the vibrant and colorful celebrations of Chinese New Year. Conversely, it also aims to enhance Perth and Western Australia's appeal as destinations for Chinese tourists, a joint effort by Perth Airport, the State Government, and Tourism WA.

The trial's success could pave the way for China Eastern Airlines to establish a year-round service at Perth Airport, fostering a stronger partnership that could significantly benefit both regions. This initiative reflects the growing importance of the Asia-Pacific region in the global aviation market and the potential for expanding air travel networks to boost economic and cultural exchange.
