A comprehensive report by Sense Partners, commissioned by Air New Zealand, underscores the airline's substantial economic contribution and its role in bolstering the nation's recovery and growth, especially in the post-pandemic era.

Mat Bolland, the Chief Corporate Affairs Officer of Air New Zealand, highlighted the essence of the study, conducted to quantify the airline's impact as New Zealand navigates its economic resurgence. "Our purpose of connecting New Zealanders with each other and the world is more than just a statement – it's a critical economic lifeline. Given our remote location, understanding Air New Zealand's role in our economy is crucial," Bolland commented.

A Catalyst for Connectivity

Air New Zealand's significance transcends the boundaries of typical airline operations. It reshapes the economic geography of New Zealand, making substantial contributions both domestically and internationally. Bolland notes, "New Zealand's geographic spread and distance from key markets pose unique challenges. Air New Zealand bridges these gaps, enhancing accessibility and market connectivity."

A Pillar of Economic Strength

Post pandemic, Air New Zealand's recovery is notable. In FY23, the airline not only returned to profitability but also strategically invested in infrastructure and new aircraft, amplifying its role in community connectivity. Bolland revealed that Air New Zealand's economic input in FY23 stood at $2.7 billion, with a staggering $26.4 billion facilitated in total economic activity. "Our contribution is multifaceted, impacting tourism, exports, and imports significantly," he added.

The future looks promising, with expectations of a continued upward trajectory in economic contribution, marking a return to pre-pandemic levels and beyond.

Employment: A Broad Spectrum Impact

Air New Zealand is a major employment driver, supporting over 130,000 jobs across New Zealand. This influence extends across various sectors, accounting for about 5.6% of all jobs in the country. "Our operations not only create direct employment but also bolster numerous sectors including tourism and international trade," Bolland noted.

In FY23, Air New Zealand played a crucial role in transporting $3.3 billion worth of export goods, underscoring its importance in the fast and secure transportation of premium goods.

Environmental Consciousness in Aviation

Despite these economic gains, Air New Zealand faces the daunting challenge of reducing emissions, a crucial aspect for the sustainability of air travel and freight. "We are committed to our decarbonization goals and acknowledge the long journey ahead to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050," Bolland acknowledged.

In conclusion, Air New Zealand's contribution to New Zealand's economy is significant and multifaceted. From boosting connectivity and driving economic activity to creating employment opportunities and tackling environmental challenges, the airline is pivotal in shaping the nation's economic and environmental future.
